Wide awake at 3am

This past Friday. At 3:01 I heard the chirping of my alarm. My to my surprise I woke up. I went down to my Macbook Pro and loaded up my cell phone carrier’s website and pre-ordered two new iPhone 4s’ for my wife and myself. Then, by 3:45 I was back in bed. This makes me wonder about my priorities in life. What are they? How do I show them? What do I do with them?
Priorities, everyone has them. Some people verbalize them. Everyone lives by them.
I would love to say that my priorities are my relationship to God, my family, and my church but if we look at my behavior at 3am on October 7 then it would suggest something different.
Jesus writes that if He isn’t our first priority we are not his disciple. Does this mean all the time? That would be hard stuff. The author of Hebrews writes that we are to be a living sacrifice. But sacrifices serve no purpose than to be pleasing to God.
Is buying an iPhone 4s at 3am pleasing to God?
There are a few ways to re-prioritize our life when we know we have gone wrong.
- Stop doing the wrong thing. You know that what you are doing isn’t working and isn’t get you what you want, so stop doing it. By any means necessary.
- Start doing the right thing. Stopping the wrong thing isn’t enough. Starting the right thing is just as important. If you aren’t doing anything, then you aren’t doing anything.
- Keep doing what is right. Sometimes it takes blood, sweat, tears, and hard work but it always takes a determined mind to keep doing what you know is right.
What do you want, right now? in a year? in five years? Is what you are doing, right now, going to get you there? If it is good. Keep doing it. If it isn’t, stop and do something different.
