The Honeymoon is Over
September 21, 2011

So here I am, 10 weeks into my appointment and it appears that the honeymoon is over. I have spent sometime talking to other pastors and it seems that about three months is about the honeymoon period for pastors.
The honeymoon period is that time when everything is wonderful and the pastor can do no wrong and if it is wrong it is okay because “He’s new, he doesn’t know yet.” Eventually this period ends. There are a few ways to know it is over and a few things to do about it.
It is over when:
- The gossip starts
- The questions about how the family is doing are over.
- The demands on your day-off become harder to fight.
- The Comparison to the previous pastor begins.
What to do with it:
- Remember, God put you at that church for a reason and you are called to serve God.
- Some Gossip will kill your church. Some Gossip will promote real discussion figure out which one it is and destroy it or encourage it.
- Even if your church forgets you have a family, don’t you forget. Get your wife flowers and remember she is with you in this journey of ministry.
- You fight for your day off. It is a nice thing to meet with people of your congregation for coffee but that 99 cent coffee will cost you more than you imagined when it comes to your soul and your family.
So, if you are a pastor and the honeymoon is so over with your new church may you find solace in God who gave you your calling and has you exactly where you need to be.
