Planking, Owling, Cone-ing, and Preaching?

First there was Planking….the idea of laying flat in random places.

Then there was Owling…. the idea of perching like an owl in random places.  Now there is the idea of Cone-ing.  Where a person orders and Ice Cream Cone and upon paying for it takes it with their hand by the Ice Cream and eats it as if nothing were wrong and refuses a napkin because they “don’t want to make a mess.” (Watch the video)

The whole reason people do owling, planking, and whatever else is because it makes people think about what is normal and what is strange.  It makes people take notice of what is happening and what is around them.  It allows the unknowns to be noticed even for a short time.

What if the next big thing after all of this was preaching?

What if someone gave a sermon and it brought notice to the little people?  What if a sermon could make people stop and think and even take notice of what is going on around them?

Maybe a sermon could do that? Maybe doing that becomes more important than making a sermon feel good?

I think it means:

1. We preach Jesus and what it means to really follow Him instead of simply looking good.

2. We stop preaching 4 simple steps to a happy life.

3. We preach to the most hurting not those with the biggest wallets.

4. We stop trying to appease family dinners and if we go over the 1 hour mark then so be it.

Maybe doing this will change everything.  Maybe this will get you fired. Maybe getting fired for doing the right thing is okay?  Or maybe what it means is that more people will hear about the grace of Jesus in a new way and more people will become followers of Jesus.

Or maybe I am wrong…. Let me know your thoughts.

  1. I seriously appreciate your raw honesty and how you disregard all the “fluffy” preaching that most “white, middle class, evangelicals” offer to other “white middle class” American Christians if you will. The fluff of the “4 simple steps to happy life” to those that have fat wallets. You spoke such relevance to the kids this week and didn’t hide behind any “fluff”.
