Rapture as Revenge
There has been a lot of talk about the rapture lately. Some believe that the rapture will happen in just a few days. As a result people everywhere are beging to crack jokes about what happens. There is even a Facebook group determined to start looting after the rapture. Meanwhile, there are those who embrace the rapture (even if not on the 21st) and can’t wait to get out of this broken world away from all these heathens. It almost becomes this idea of “I’m getting out of here and you get what you deserve.” In other words rapture just becomes a revenge theology.
I wonder if this doctrine of rapture takes us away from the message of Jesus. Jesus says that people matter and that people who are hurting matter the most to Jesus. This idea of wanting to get out of here can lead us to a place where we become so focused on ourselves that we forget about others.
Spending too much time worrying about when we get out of here means we spend less time dealing with those who are stuck in actually broken places. We become numb to the hurt around us and we begin to believe that people are hurting because they deserve it.
Or we end up helping them not out of love and compassion like Jesus but because we want to kill time until we get out of here and if it turns out they get to come with us then so be it but that isn’t the goal.
Perhaps I am one of those crazy social justice weirdos but when we become consumed with getting out of here we turn inward on our self and when I read the Bible I see a Jesus who was exactly opposite of that.
Jesus was so concerned with other people that instead of turning inward on himself, and saying that those sinners got what they deserved, Jesus stepped down out of His paradise and started telling people that they matter to Him and then Jesus backed that up with actions. Jesus would actually make their world better.
Perhaps if we acted like Jesus this world wouldn’t look like such a mess and we wouldn’t be wondering when we get out of here.
Or maybe I’m wrong and none of this will matter on May 22, but what if I am right?
