Birthday presents
Last week, my kids had a joint birthday party. They were surrounded by friends and family and were showered with gifts. My daughter got a doll house and dolls, clothes, and all sorts of toys. My son got clothes, dinosaurs, and all sorts of toys. Their big gift from family was a Power Wheels, specifically a dodge charger police car. Meanwhile, we have a Compassion child. This is one of those groups where we spend 38 dollars a month and they make sure the child has everything they need. When their birthday comes up I send in extra money for them to get a nice birthday present. I got a letter from the little boy with a list of what he got for his birthday. Rice, flour, shorts, and paper for school. This is heartbreaking and awe inducing at the same time. This little boy was excited over the things he got.

They were items he needed to sustain his life, my kids got entertainment and toys they will forget or out grow in a few weeks. This broke my heart at what this boy doesn’t have and is missing out on. On the other hand it brought me awe that God would bless me so much and allow me to bless my kids so much. On another hand (I have 3 hands) it made me upset that I am so greedy and want so much while this little boy from Kenya is content with rice for his birthday. So what do I do? Do I buy my kids less? Do I give more to Compassion (they really are a great group)? Do I think twice about what I do buy for my kids? How can I teach my kids to be content with what they have and to take care of those who don’t have as much?
These are not easy questions and they don’t have easy answers but I would love to hear what you have to say?

Good blog. My response: Buy less stuff, even kids toys and choose human interaction for entertianment instead. Best wishes.
