Church vs. Cabela’s
The other day I went in to a Cabela’s store and a few things came to mind. First, I don’t have enough testosterone to be in there. Second, the church should be more like Cabela’s.
As soon as I entered and I saw a “Check your guns at the door” sign I knew I was not man enough to be in that store. I have never seen so many pick-up trucks in the parking lot. I am a nerd, my heart races at Best Buy, not at Cabela’s. I have never seen any one place that valued violence, power, and conquest than at this store. I felt as out of place as a ballerina at a Pro-Wrestleing show.
Second, I began to think what if the church took some cues from Cabela’s?
First, Cabela’s values intentional action, the average church values sitting in nice neat rows and listening to someone else talk about action.
Second, Cabela’s has something for everyone who wants to get out and do something (they had pink hand guns marketed just for women). The average church only has something for little kids and old folks.
Next, Cabela’s offered the proof of their conquests (they sell buffalo, bison, and Moose meat) the average church expects people to believe in something they can’t feel for themselves. How often has the church shown people what it means to give grace instead of giving judgement?
What if the church looked more like Cabela’s and had people at every turn who were willing to tell you about the amazing things you can do with what you can get from them?
What if church was all about adventure, risk, and the unknown instead of boredom, quietness, and solitude?
Maybe Jesus is already like Cabela’s? Jesus says to sell your coat and get a sword because it will be dangerous. Jesus says that we could get killed for being a follower of Jesus.
Or maybe I have no idea what I am talking about because I have never hunted or killed an animal.
