Satan at a Funeral
In the last week I have had two funerals, both were interesting and I felt truly privileged to be a part of these moments in a families life. However, these funerals have caused me to think about how I want to leave this place.
After much prayer and soul searching I have decided I want to go out like Elijah (he never died, was taken up to heaven by God) or I want to go out like Telemachus (he was a Christian who was killed trying to stop the gladiator fights in Rome).
Either way, I am going out because of following Jesus.
I have full intention of causing such a ruckus in the spiritual realm that when I die Satan himself shows up at the funeral to make sure I’m gone and out of his way.
One of my favorite theologians of the modern era is Mike Yaconelli who said that sometimes death isn’t about getting there comfortable but about sliding in sideways and jumping out of the car and screaming Wow!!! WHAT A RIDE!! (He stated this 6 days before his death in 2003)
Another thing Mike Yaconelli said was that he wants to be remembered for being messy, for destroying the thought that Jesus was nice and that following Jesus was easy. I want to be remembered like that.
I want to be remembered in such a way that when I walk in to a room demons shudder and when I speak Satan grabs his ears and screams at the top of his lungs “I CAN’T HEAR YOU!!”
Being a Christian has never been about making people happy or having lots of friends. In fact, when Jesus died he was left with very few friends and lots of enemies.
So how do you want to go out? Like David? Like Paul? Jonah? Judas? Why?
