God’s Character Flaws

July 16, 2010

So recently I have been reading the Bible and been reading about God.  It occurs to me that God has some serious character flaws.

First, the Parable of the Prodigal Son.  This is a story Jesus uses to describe God and how people can relate to God.  In this story God is portrayed as a father who is approached by his son and the son asks him for his inheritance.  Now this son is essentially saying “I wish you were dead.” The father should have slapped his son in the face and given him nothing but the father (who is supposed to be God) gives him his money.  Then when the son wastes the money on whores, slots, and fast cars the father welcomes him back.  What a flaw, the father (God) should have killed him, beat him, told him “I told you so” or something.  This kind of flaw will get a person taken advantage of.

Then, Jesus tells another story about a farmer who is “throwing” seed on to all types of soil.  What a waste.  A good farmer only puts the seed where they can be reasonably sure it will grow, they don’t just throw it around.  You would think that this farmer just had an unending supply of seeds and that he could afford to put them anywhere no matter what happens to them.  How flawed.

As if that weren’t enough, in the book of Exodus (Old Testament) God is talking to Moses and says “I feel my people’s pain.”   God isn’t supposed to be close, personal, or care about others.  God is distant and far away.  If you get close to people gets you hurt.

This other time in the book of Deuteronomy God says that no matter how far away you have run, how many bad choices you have made, or how many times you made those bad choices you can return to God and God will forgive you.  Really?!? That is horribly flawed thinking because when you do bad things you (and I) should suffer the consequences.  When we don’t suffer the natural consequences of our actions we are prone to do it again? At least I am.

So God wastes things, God doesn’t punish, God forgives, and God gets close to people.  All those flaws that will get you ridiculed, mocked, mugged, and hurt by the stupidity of people.

I understand why people can’t believe God is perfect, God obviously isn’t.  God is flawed, if God were truly perfect we would get what we deserve, God would be distant, and we wouldn’t be forgiven.

Thank God for flaws.
