Faith like Kona or Faith like Folgers

June 17, 2010

I am a coffee snob.  I only drink certain types of coffee, specifically fair trade, shade grown, dark/bold roasted, and locally purchased coffee.  I also only drink coffee at certain times.  I do not like my coffee unless I am awake early in the morning (before 8am).  I only will drink it after the morning if I am drinking it with friends and I still will not drink it if it is Starbucks, Folgers, or anything decaf.

Sometimes I wonder if this is like faith?  Do we only live out a life of faith when everything is just right.  When it has been nurtured by others who agree exactly as we do?  When it has been treated fairly, and when it is safe to bring out because we are among others who agree with us?

What if that isn’t how we are supposed to live out our faith?

Instead of living like our faith is a 25 dollar bag of coffee that we can only share with people who can appreciate it, we treated our faith like it was Folgers coffee that was good enough for everyone, even people who weren’t snobs of coffee/religion.
