I miss my grandma

June 15, 2010

Sometimes, I miss my grandma.  She passed away about 6 months before I got married.  She never got to see me get married or graduate from college.  She never met my kids.  She always told me I would be a pastor, even if I didn’t believe her or Jesus.  Now that I am so close to finishing seminary she won’t get to see it.   On Saturday I was commissioned a provisional elder in the United Methodist Church and my grandma didn’t get to see it.  I missed her that night.  Then on Sunday was the ordination service where the newly ordained elders were consecrated and their sponsors put stoles on them.  In the UM denomination pastors cannot wear a stole until they are ordained as elder.

The stoles given at ordination seem to have a story behind them.  They have so many designs and this is the only clergy apparel that a pastor can choose how it looks.  Some have doves, peace signs, flames, crosses, one was even tie-died.  Some of them were even hand-made.

That is when I missed my grandma the most this weekend.  She could knit and sew and could have made me my first stole.  Sometimes I miss my grandma a lot.

  1. Having lost my grandma a few months back I kinda get it. My Grandma did get to meet our kids, but if we have anymore, she won’t get to that kid. since her passing I have had several moments where I knew she would have loved to have been there.
