Repeat Spirituality
My son enjoys watching the TV show Imagination Movers. It is on the Disney channel and the new episodes are on Saturdays and they repeat the episodes twice per day all week. As a result my son and I watch the same episodes over and over and OVER. I can sing all the songs and quote most of the shows.
However, these repeats got me thinking about those spiritual moments we have in life. Some call them spiritual highs or mountain top experiences, those moments when we feel closest to God and that God is physically right next to us.
I’ve had moments like that, they are amazing and sometimes they occur during Sunday worship or during intimate times alone in the Bible or among a group of people.
No matter how they occur why would we want to repeat it? Reruns get boring the thousandth time through so why would I want to go through the entire ordeal to get to that mountain top experience all over again when there are other mountains.
One of those mountain top events came for me when I was in high school during a worship service that was particularly stunning and moving. I left that space knowing I had been with God and I was forever changed.
As amazing as that experience was I can’t recreate that moment. To put the same people, the same songs, and the same feelings back in there is impossible why would I even try?
There are so many aspects to God that are waiting to be seen and so many things God is waiting to show us that to repeat the same old stuff is a waste of our time and pretends that God has nothing else to show us.
Do we do this in church? Is that why we sing the same songs? Is that why we don’t change the worship time? Is this why churches stop inviting people to church? To overcome this do we need to stop trying to force a reconnect with God and let the reconnect just happen naturally through prayer, repentance, confession, worship and wherever that takes us is where it takes us.
Dear Jesus, You have millions of new things to show me today. I apologize for repeating the old feel good ways but I just want to feel close to you and all that you are.” – Amen

Thanks for the insight. My kids both love the imagination movers too so the analogy isn’t lost on me. I think you hit the nail on the head and have offered a challenge for us all. I pray in agreement along with you.
By the way…I switched over from blogspot to wordpress after hearing the features wordpress offered from you the other day. You can check me out at makemine10.wordpress.com
Awesome. I love wordpress and everything it can do, I have hesitated to switch to private hosting because I don’t know if private hosting does as much. Let me know if you have any questions. I’ll add you to my blog roll.
