Called Twice.
I am studying Hebrew in seminary. This week we have translated Genesis 22:1-15. This is the passage about the binding of Isaac. While doing this we are looking at copies of the oldest Hebrew Manuscripts in existence. We noticed that in the oldest manuscripts God calls to Abraham twice, but in the newer copies only calls him once. Why? Scholars seem to believe that the older the manuscript the more reliable they are to the original, and I tend to agree with the scholars on this part. So then, if they are more reliable it means every time God calls people to something specific and great God calls them at least twice.
Abraham, Samuel, Moses, Peter, etc… all were called by God more than one time to do something specific. All are called to follow but those that God wants to use for something gigantic it seems that God wants to be abundantly clear who He is talking to because it means that God is going to do something great with you.
Fast forward to the time when Jesus is sitting down to a meal and Jesus says “Martha, Martha.” What does that mean? What then is Jesus trying to prove? Maybe this isn’t a scold maybe it is a call to Martha because Jesus has something amazing planned for her.
Fast forward again to you, how many times has God called you? Twice? Three times? More? Is God calling you to set captives free? Feed His sheep? Heal the broken-hearted? Have you responded like Samuel and thought someone else was talking to him? Or like Abraham who says “Here I am.”
Either way, God is calling you. He has called you for something are you listening?
