Washed by Blood

August 21, 1999. This was when I was sitting with my pastor in his car in the church parking lot.  After spending months asking questions and figuring out for myself what it means to follow Jesus and live like Jesus and for Jesus I gave in and decided to go for it.  To give Jesus everything I had.  I knew that because Jesus had changed my life it meant a lot of changes.  I needed to change my walking, talking, and thinking.  It meant that I started down a path that created a desire in me to change and be better. One of those things that needed to change was the music I listened to.

I always had an eclectic sense of music and I listened to everything from Dr. Dre to Grateful Dead and KoRn.  I really liked listening to KoRn.  However, as a new creation in Christ I knew I needed to stop listening to them.  If I were to grow closer to the God who saved me I needed to listen to music that edified the body of Christ.  The new Christian friends I was making told me that the most contemporary music they found was Lord I Lift Your Name on High. This was very depressing for me because that song got boring after singing it 1300 times.

After listening to boring Christian hymns 300 times I began to wonder how much of this Christian stuff was worth it? We didn’t even have good music to listen to.

One of the bands I missed most was KoRn (stop laughing they were popular when I was in school).

However, in 2005 the lead singer Brian “Head” Welch left the band because he was now a follower of Jesus (I have blogged about this before). You can watch his testimony here.

In 2008 Welch released his Christian album and yesterday I became aware of it and downloaded it, via iTunes, for the first time.

I’m not plugging it as something you would like or not like but just commenting on the lyrics.

One song titled Washed by the blood

I know you’ve tried – To satisfy – Your appetite – for too long – You wonder why – You are alive – You’ve lived a lie – For too long – So now your done – Life isn’t fun – Anymore – What’s this life for?

- These are not – Only words to a song – Come to me – You’re forgiven now – Your washed by Blood – From deep inside – You’re not a prisoner of your old life – Washed by Blood – A brand new start – It’s time that I rebuild your heart – I paid your price – I sacrificed – My human life – All for you – Come to the light – You will shine bright – You’ll never die - That’s the truth – Cuz I have sworn – You’ll be reborn – If you choose - What’s there to lose? –

These are not – Only words to a song – Come to me – You’re forgiven now – Your washed by Blood – From deep inside - You’re not a prisoner of your old life – Washed by Blood – A brand new start – It’s time that I rebuild your heart

- Wash away – All the pain - With the blood – No more shame – Understand – Who you are – And what your life is – For – For – For – Wash away – All your pain – With the blood – No more shame – Understand – Who you are – And what your life is - For – For – For – I am – Taking over from now on – You can’t escape don’t even try to run – I can’t just sit and watch you die no more – You will begin to learn what life is for – I’ve – Chosen this – Time – To change your – Mind – So you will – Find – Your – Way – Back – Home - Where you be – Long – Your heart of – Stone – Will start to – Feel - Love – From – Now – On – True – Live for me and you will see your life will be so worry free – Say goodbye to your old life give me a try – Be - A – Live – There shall be no more Death – Nor sorrow – Nor Crying - There shall be no more pain – For the former things have passed away –

Your washed by Blood – From deep inside – You’re not a prisoner of your old life – Washed by Blood – A brand new start – It’s time that I rebuild your heart –

Your washed by Blood – From deep inside – You’re not a prisoner of your old life – Washed by Blood – A brand new start - It’s time that I rebuild your heart

– Come fly away – With me – Come fly away with me – You know I love you – I love you – Come fly away

Welch sings about being free because we are washed in the blood.  If we stop and think about it, this is disgusting.  Down right gross.  To be covered in someone else’s blood? How grotesque.

Yet, that is the glorious tension of the gospel.  That the grotesque can’t become spotless unless the spotless becomes grotesque.

The best part is the that spotless did become grotesque so that the grotesque can be spotless.  Never before and never since has there been anyone, anywhere at anytime, who was spotless and clean who became bloody so that we, the grotesque, could become washed by their blood.

We had to be covered in blood that only came out because it was beaten, stabbed, and nailed out of Him who is God in the flesh.  Being covered in that blood is what makes us spotless in the eyes of God.

“Jesus, your blood washes me clean. Remind me of your unfailing love, keep me in the shadow of your wings, and when more dirt comes into my life scrub me clean. – Amen.”
