Mail-in Rebate
Recently my wife and I got new cell phones. We both got brand-new phones that do everything from check email to update Twitter and Facebook and even call people. Part of what made us decide to get these phones is that both came with a mail-in rebate. The rebate made these super-phones cheaper than the regular phones and that was a big selling point. I find that when it comes to Mail-in rebates people typically have one of three reactions. They either don’t care about the rebate at all, they are skeptical that it could be a scam, or they jump at the chance for the free money on something they would have bought anyway.
Everyone has their reasons for acting the way they do about the rebate but I have found that if you press a person about why they reacted you generally get the same responses.
- The person who doesn’t care about the rebate says something like: “I don’t need the money and I don’t want that product so the rebate is meaningless to me.”
- The person who thinks the rebate is a scam and is skeptical was probably burned before and doesn’t want to believe it could be true and waste the time, energy, stamp, initial cost, or anything else to get the rebate.
- The person who jumps at the rebate and sends in the forms right away, even if the rebate is fifty-cents says “I was going to buy this product anyway I might as well get the rebate.”
What if these people groups respond the same way to Jesus? Jesus says give me everything, your joy and sorrow, hurts and pains, your very life and I will give you eternal life and people respond in the same way.
- Some say I don’t need eternal life I’ve got everything I need right here.
- Some have been hurt before by grand promises at bigger things and are unwilling to be hurt again so they hesitate and hold back from giving everything to Jesus.
- Some jump at the chance because they realize they didn’t have that much to begin with so they run up and say “Jesus, I give you everything. I will follow you anywhere.”
So then the question becomes if you are offered a rebate would you take it?
