New Churches everywhere

November 25, 2009

Recently I went back to the town I grew up, it is a lovely little town.  When I grew up there were the usual churches; Baptist, Methodist, Free Methodist, Independent Baptist, Presbyterian and one non-denominational.  All of these church had been around for a hundred years or more and all the families grew up in the churches and would always support the churches but the churches had one downfall.  The one downfall is that most churches would not change and had very little going on.  Sure there was Sunday School and some churches had Youth Group and a VBS in the summer but that would have been the end and it was a large struggle to do anything that would make a lasting change in people.

However, that appears to be changing.  Those churches are still there but now I saw two churches that had closed their doors and were for sale.  I also saw at least six new non-denominational churches that were store-fronts and in other churches or in old business buildings.

While I’m not against denominations (I really like my denomination), I do see in my hometown groups of people who want something more, they desire a tangible faith that effects infects every part of their life.  A people who believe that if Jesus changed everything about their life then shouldn’t the place they worship be part of their life?

Denominations can do this, some are, but in that town and in that place it seems that they are not and while I make blanket statements without having been to these new churches it seems that the churches that already existed in that area were not meeting the needs.
