National Youth Worker Convention.

Over this past weekend I was at the Youth Specialties National Youth Worker Convention.  The conference was amazing, but what really struck me was the way my son acted, he is 18months.  When we took him to the main sessions he loved the worship and the skit guys but when the worship was over and the speaker would start my son would fall asleep.  My son would then sleep through the entire message until the music started again.

When the music was playing he was wide awake, even raising his arms and once he pushed me out of his way, so he could still see.  I was thinking about this and I wonder how often we do this? How often do we enjoy the things that entertain us, and keep us busy, but as soon as we need to learn something or to hear a spoken word that will uplift our soul, or bring us closer to the ones we love, we tune out.  We may not actually fall asleep but we go somewhere and we start Tweeting, texting, or just daydreaming, and we miss the crucial moment that could change our life.  I admit I do this as often as the next person and I miss the important times and the sentimental issues that I could be a part of.

Is this wrong? That only depends if you are missing something important.  For my son, he needed the nap but for us during class? During church? While talking to our spouse? While praying? These are all moments we can’t get back and to miss them is to possibly miss moments we can never get back and those transformative moments are gone forever.
